How do you find the right path?

By  |

Although it rarely excites in the same way I had first imagined, I used to daydream about days like today. But how do you find the right path when everything is pushing us in the same direction?

Yeah, during school days I remember reading about IT experts who travelled the world with expensive laptops, working their way from one exotic destination to the next. Honestly, the thought of doing something like this was pure fantasy at the time. Afterall, I knew precisely nothing about computers and was still to figure out how my brother Andy connected the thirty-foot telephone line to our desktop computer at home.

But then we don’t really have all that much control growing up, especially not when anything and everything is trying to push is in the same direction. In many ways, I feel as though we just end up on a particular path by chance…and then nobody tells you it might not be the right one.

Fast foward to this morning, I sit here in a luxury tent in Africa and think about all the places I can go. It’s madness and aside from the sacrfices involved, the good fortune of my life over the past few years is not lost on me. It also reminds me of a passage I read last week in a book called “The monk who sold his ferrari” (Thanks Gary Malone).

“Be careful with the thoughts that you put into your mind every second of every minute of every day. Your outer world reflects the state of your inner world. By controlling the thoughts that you think and the way you respond to the events of your life, you begin to control your destiny.”

Do we inherit the same path?

So what am I sayin’? I’m sayin’ it obviously takes work and perseverance to make anything happen but in my own experience, it was just as important to search for, and then choose the right path, rather than stick with the one I happened to find myself on.

I'm an Outdoor Adventure Blogger from Dublin, Ireland. In late 2013 I began riding a bicycle across Africa and it was during this adventure when I discovered a passion for the great outdoors and the general uncertainty of life on the road. Next April, I am hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.

    Thank you Derek!

Those were words that I truly needed to hear this evening. I especially liked your quote: “Be careful with the thoughts that you put into your mind every second of every minute of every day. Your outer world reflects the state of your inner world. By controlling the thoughts that you think and the way you respond to the events of your life, you begin to control your destiny.”

I find it very, very hard to change the thoughts around…I wish I knew how to do that better b/c the few times I’m able to it does make a world of difference.

Hope that where you land next is better than where you are coming from! Thanks again,
