Why I am hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in 2018

My name is Derek Cullen, I am an Outdoor Blogger from Ireland, travelling the world and working online. Having spent two years creating a small online business and working toward this experience, I am excited to announce my next long distance adventure:

Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in 2018

In April 2018 I will travel to America to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. Starting in Campo at the border of Mexico, the “PCT” travels 4,279km through the Sierra and Cascade Mountain ranges, all the way to Manning Park in Canada.

My decision to hike the PCT will come as a surprise to some people for different reasons, mostly for the fact that my outdoor trips until now have been very isolated journeys with little interaction for long periods. However, there are very specific reasons for which I have long wanted to set foot on this trail and likewise, there are reasons I have waited until now to make it happen.

Why did I wait so long to hike the PCT?

As some of you may know, after spending one year cycling across Africa, I found it impossible to return to a conventional lifestyle. I even travelled to Canada during this time to start anew but the prospect of being outdoors was always on my mind. In short, I decided there was little else I wanted to do more at this time in my life than taking outdoor adventures, especially while I feel so able-bodied. However, this was something I wanted to do for the foreseeable future and the question in this regard was “How will I fund these trips in future?”.

Sponsorship and starting an online business

I have always wanted an outdoor or adventure related sponsor. Except, these sponsorships are very difficult to come by and I felt there was also something wrong with approaching potential sponsors without being able to offer a genuine return on investment.

At the same time, I wanted to remove any risk of failure and take full responsibility for the outcome. When I realized it was possible to earn a small income from travel writing and long story short; it took two years to create a small digital marketing agency which can hopefully continue to fund my future outdoor adventures. For this reason, I feel that the time has come to start preparing to hike the Pacific Crest Trail in 2018.

Well, I am now training to hike the Pacific Crest Trail in 2018 and I will be using my VLOG to document the experience, from paperwork, visas and buying outdoor gear to getting my online business ready for six months of silence.

I would love for you to join me on this adventure by subscribing to my YouTube Channel or alternatively, please feel free to like the Facebook Page. Either way, thank you for being here and I look forward to hearing from you on the road!
