Africa Overland Tours

Are Africa Overland Tours Back on the Road in 2022?

By  |

I was really shocked last year to see Oasis Overland call it a day. I was a tour leader for Oasis for two years and the company had an incredible reputation in the overland market. I’m not sure what happened in the weeks that followed this announcement but the brand was relaunched and the website lists all the same overland trips in Africa as before!

At that time, I worried this might be the end of overland tours in Africa. The truth is, overloading has changed a lot over the past 10/15 years and looks very different than the photos you might see in the past…

I was concerned because it felt like this might be the beginning of the end and the last of overloading tours in Africa. I also say this because things have changed so much over the past 10 years and the number of passengers on trucks have been in steady decline since the mid to late 2000s.

But alas, Oasis came back from the dead and as things look more promising with the pandemic, it looks as though overland companies are ready to go.

If you look at all the big companies, you should see a lineup of dates for the year ahead. Most of these tours seem to begin in April/May 2022 and it fills me with hope to see these exciting adventure tours get back on the road.

I absolutely love this type of travel and that’s why I ended up working as an overland tour leader for many years. It’s fun and exciting and different every day and you just never forget the new friends you meet on board.
