When I think of my favorite Africa trips for couples, I always think of a private safari in Tanzania. I say this because there’s a nice mix of experiences on a trip to Tanzania. For instance, you can enjoy a wildlife safari in Serengeti National Park and then take a short flight to Zanzibar for a romantic getaway. However, if you don’t have your heart set on being alone the entire time, I suggest you might consider taking an overland tour that visits these same destinations. Overland tours are suitable trips to Africa for couples because they can save you money, add a greater sense of security and then add some social interaction to the occasion. But why do I say this?
My Experience of Overland Africa Trips for Couples
When I was working as a tour leader in Africa, it was common for my tours to consist of a nice mix of singles and couples. These type of trips (overland tours) involve a lot of time spent with a group of people but I found most couples really enjoyed the camraderie. I mention this because I often see couples on private safari and it can look a little boring and unsocial at times. The couples on my overland tours often said joining an overland tour in Africa was the best decision they ever made!
Let’s take a quick look at some of my Africa trips for couples suggestions.

Trips for Couples in Africa that You Should Consider
Private Safari: Serengeti National Park & Ngorongoro Crater
This private safari to Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater includes 3 game drives. It also includes 4 nights accommodation, 3 meals each day and all park fees. Two of these nights involve camping which should give you a great experience sleeping in the wilds of Africa. The operator of this tour receives fantastic reviews and it’s the best private safari option I can see in terms of Africa trips for couples. If you would prefer to travel as part of a group, I have another option to consider…
Group Tour: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater & Zanzibar
You could take a 10-day group tour which includes wildlife safaris and a trip to Zanzibar. More specifically, this will include game drives and camping in Serengeti National Park and a trip into the spectacular crater known as Ngorongoro. At the end of the safari, you will then take a short flight from Arusha to Stone Town in Zanzibar. The white powdered beaches of Zanzibar is the perfect place to unwind at the end of a safari and a nice addition to any Africa trips for couples!
Group Tour: Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
It’s possible to arrive in Uganda and go directly to see the mountain gorillas. However, aside from the gorillas, you should want to see and experience a lot more than just the gorillas on a trip to Uganda. This is why I often suggest joining an overland tour from Nairobi that takes in a host of unique experiences in both Kenya and Uganda before starting your gorilla trek. The only thing I would mention is that this section is more primitive than elsewhere on the continent. ie. The accommodation etc might not make this the most romantic of trips for couples in Africa!!
Tour operators in Africa required to have proof of personal travel insurance. I always use World Nomads and suggest you at least have an idea of the cost for your trip. It takes just a few seconds to get a quote on the link below…
3-Day Safari Package to Kruger National Park in South Africa
You might consider taking a safari in Kruger National Park in South Africa. It would be straightforward to arrive in Johannesburg for the safari and then perhaps fly to Cape Town for a city break afterward. Just an idea! This safari package includes 2 nights’ accommodation at Baluleni Safari Lodge, 3-hour safaris, and a full-day safari in the Kruger National Park. It also includes all meals, and the services of a private guide for the safaris. Highlights include the safaris in Grietjie in an open Safari vehicle, the Kruger National Park safari, and the exclusive experience at the unfenced lodge which is located on the Olifants River. Baluleni Safari Lodge takes care of the safari and they have a long list of excellent reviews for this 3-day safari in Kruger National Park.
8-Day Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and Etosha Safari in Namibia
Join this group tour which takes in some of the best experiences in Namibia. You will not only take game drives in Etosha National Park but also visit Swakopmund and one of the largest sand dunes in the world – Dune 45. A driver/guide will be with you at all times and 7 nights accommodation is included. There should be a lot of opportunities to view wildlife on this Africa trip for couples and to see the sun rise and fall on the desert landscapes of Namibia.
Group Tour: 21-Day Adventure from Victoria Falls to Cape Town
Another favorite tour of mine begins at the spectacular Victoria Falls. You can enjoy many adrenaline style activities in Vic Falls such as kayaking or whitewater rafting. The trip also ventures across Botswana where the animals roam wild and you can join a wilderness canoe trip into the Okavango Delta. As if that’s not enough, this overland tour travels through the Namibia where you will have many opportunities to watch the sun rise and fall over the Namib desert landscapes. It’s an incredible adventure that also finishes in one of the most picturesque cities in the world – Cape Town.
